Hydrocephalus - A Mom's Diary
Dedicated to Idiani, whose world unknown to others speaking out of feelings interpreted through actions and emotions.
A statement of being born in a world of her own.
Idiani was born a beautiful baby on 29th April,1995 through a caesarian section.
All features seems normal except for her brain abnormalities, so says the neurologists who attended to her after being born.
The abnormalities of Idiani's brain is called "Hydrocephalus". Which by medical definitions means "water on the Brain". The neurologist advise for her to be operated upon where a shunt tube to be inserted from her brain to her stomach in order to reduce the water pressure of the brain.
Hydrocephalus is usually due to blockage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) outflow in the ventricles or in the subarachnoid space over the brain. In a person without hydrocephalus, CSF continuously circulates through the brain, its ventricles and the spinal cord and is continuously drained away into the circulatory system.
There is no cure for hydrocephalus.
One of the most performed treatments for hydrocephalus, the cerebral shunt. The shunt must be implanted through neurosurgery into the patient's brain, a procedure which itself may cause brain damage.
